Paris was burning, I saw the flames
From my coworkers phone, Old Notre Dame
Was shrouded in smoke, a small choir sang at point zero

As onlookers stared at the crumbling spire,
The news cycle fed on the glamour of fire
And anyone hungry for loss could claim that they’d been there

Tragedy groupies marked themselves sad
Recalled a college vacation they had
And prayed for a window, “May heaven preserve it and keep it from danger”

The president promised a phoenix from ash
The funding poured in from the billionaire class
And other world powers emptied their pockets in good faith

The lord sure does work in mysterious ways
Gold crosses don’t melt, but the wood is erased
Rebuilding his palace seems like a waste
When there are no homes for those seeking shelter
And thorns and barbed wire greet those crossing borders
Neighborhoods drown in poisonous waters
Dire commotion the news never covers
